Next Mile
A traffic jam stretching on for days
The radio pierces the malaise
So strange a place like a slow-moving train
I can’t believe people can’t stay in their own lane
Hard to believe the words you say
Told me this trip would be all right
Your petty musings don’t impress me
And I’ve no strength for a fight
Watch the cars stack up and it’s gonna be a while
I’m trying to make the next mile
In a rush to go but not even sure why
I see the wreck ahead. Red and blue illuminate the sky
A guilty breath it’s someone else and not me
If I get there I know I will finally be free
Hard to believe the words you say
Told me this trip would be all right
Your petty musings don’t impress me
And I’ve no strength for a fight
The background fades. We both force a smile
Staring down the end of our last mile
